Craniofacial surgery is surgery of the face and facial skeleton to correct defects that involve both the soft tissue and the bone or just the soft tissue. This practice has a focus on Reconstructive Craniofacial surgery. We specialize in:
Craniofacial reconstruction for tumor defects.
Reconstruction for trauma, both acute trauma reconstruction and late post-trauma reconstruction
Reconstruction for Congenital Craniofacial syndromes that involve the sutures, the orbits and the upper jaw. The surgery is done both on children and adults.
Another application of craniofacial surgery is to try to enhance the facial appearance of those people that are otherwise normal by either working with the soft tissue as typical cosmetic surgery or deeper on the bones to help shape the soft tissues and achieve correction in a more aesthetic way.
The last aspect, which is not thought of usually, is reconstruction following cosmetic surgery. People sometimes have complications and part of our practice involves corrections for the cosmetic patient that has had a misadventure.
Reconstruction of Cleft Lip and Palate deformities
Cleft lip and palate deformities are generally treated with presurgical alignment of the cleft and surgical closing of the openings before speech develops. The procedure is complicated by facial growth (most patiients are quite young) and septal corrective deformity, which causes nasal distortion. Dr. Matthews is an expert in this field and has a range of surgical and non-surgical techniques he employs depending on the individual needs of the patient. It is important from our point of view to have the child as normal appearing as possible with as normal speech as possible.
